Oscars 2025: Italy selects WWII drama 'Vermaglio' for international feature film race
A1 Digital India News: Italy will send Maura Delpero's World War II drama Vermiglio to the 2025 Oscars for best international feature film. Vermiglio premiered last month at the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Silver Lion Grand Jury Grand Prize. Sideshow and Janus Films acquired domestic rights to the film shortly after its North American premiere in Toronto.
Set in a village called Vermiglio in the Italian Alps in 1944, the film tells the story of a local family whose lives are shattered by the arrival of a soldier refugee from a distant conflict. As the world recovers from the tragedy and destruction of World War II, the family in Vermiglio faces a crisis of its own. The cast includes Tommaso Ragno, Giuseppe De Domenico, Roberta Rovelli, Martina Scrinzi, Orietta Notari and Carlota Gamba.
Vermiglio is the sequel to Delpero's acclaimed 2019 directorial debut Maternal, which is based on the director's own family history. He made the film with Carole Baratan, Pauline Boucheny Pinon, Jacques-Henri Bronquart and Tatiana Cozar. Vermiglio is a co-production between Cenadora and RAI Cinema and a co-production between Charades Production and Versace Production, with Anonymous Content participating.
Italy was the most successful country at the Oscars, winning 14 Best International Feature trophies out of 33 nominations (France was second with 12 wins out of 41 nominations). The last Italian feature film to win the award was Paolo Sorrentino's 2013 La Gran Bellezza.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will announce the shortlisted films for the 2025 Oscars on December 17. Nominations will be announced on January 17, 2025. The 97th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 2.
