A1 Digital India News: Tadanobu Asano is set to receive The Hollywood Reporter's Trailblazer Award at the upcoming 37th installment of the Tokyo International Film Festival next month.

The chameleon-like actor has been a mainstay of Japanese cinema for nearly three decades, as he's often seen in key supporting roles in major Hollywood productions. But his breakout performance as the irascible samurai Yabuse in FX's hit series Shogun brought him a new level of global recognition last year. In the process of becoming a fan favorite, Asano also received his first Emmy nomination for the role.

THR's Trailblazer Awards, which recently honored six-time Emmy winners Jean Smart, David Oyelowo, Eva Longoria, Matt Bomer, Niecy Nash-Bates and America Ferrera, recognized artists for their work and career impact in Hollywood by highlighting stories and characters traditionally marginalized. International editor Abid Rahman will present the award to Asano at THR Japan's annual Tokyo Film Festival gala on October 30 at The Peninsula Hotel in the city's posh Ginza district. The event is expected to be attended by hundreds of stars and deets from the Japanese film industry.

Asano is known in Japan as a pioneer of independent-minded Asian cinema — and his reputation hasn't diminished since the global success of Shogun. He walked the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival earlier this month to star in Japanese entertainment giant Takeshi Kitano's acclaimed yakuza satire Broken Rage. Next up is Thai director Pen-Ek Ratanaruang's culinary thriller Morte Cucina and filmmaker Mark Gill's Ravens, a biographical drama based on the life of famed Japanese photographer Masahisa Fukase.

A survey of Asano's filmography includes leading roles in projects by many of Japan's most acclaimed directors over the past 30 years, including Takashi Miike (Ichi the Assassin), Kitano (Zatoichi), Kiyoshi Kurosawa (Journey to the Coast), Shinya Tsukamoto (Gemini), Hirokazu Kore-eda (Maboroshi), Shunji Iwai (Picnic), Gakuryu Ishii (80,000V Electric Dragon) and Nagisa Oshima (Taboo). On the international front, he collaborated with top regional auteurs: Pen-Ek (Last Life in the Universe), Taiwan's Hou Hsiao-hsien (Café Lumière), Russia's Sergei Bodrov (The Mongolians). On the domestic front, he has worked with many Hollywood stars, such as Martin Scorsese (Silence), Roland Emmerich (Midway), Johnny Depp (Minamata), the Thor films with Marvel (Asano plays Hogan), and Warner Bros. . . the Mortal Kombat franchise (as Raiden).
